VICTORIA, BC — A very familiar name and face is returning to Victoria to lead the pitching staff of the HarbourCats.
Zachary Swanson — who has served as batboy, pitcher and play-by-play voice of the team — has been hired as Pitching Coach for the 2026 season by Todd Haney, the Head Coach who is entering his sixth season as the Victoria skipper.
Swanson is in his first year as the pitching coach at Hawaii Pacific University (D2) in Honolulu, under Head Coach Dane Fujinaka, a former HarbourCats catcher who coached in the Toronto Blue Jays system.
“After coaching Zach a couple of seasons, I am thrilled for the opportunity to coach with him now,” said Haney, who started Swanson on the mound against the Corvallis Knights in Game 1 of the WCL championship series in 2019.
“Zach brings energy, experience and expertise to the HarbourCats coaching staff. Our pitchers will love working with him.”
Swanson, the son of Managing Partner Jim Swanson, is a Lambrick Park grad who spent time with both the Eagles and Mariners BCPBL programs. He spent two college years with the San Diego Christian (NAIA) Hawks, then moved to the Park-Gilbert (NAIA) Buccaneers in Arizona, under Head Coach Kelly Stinnett, a long-time MLB catcher, to complete his college playing career.
Swanson will work with Bullpen Coach Darius Opdam Bak, who filled the same role last summer under now-retired Scott Anderson, who held the pitching coach job for three seasons. Opdam Bak is a former HarbourCats and Victoria Golden Tide (CCBC) pitcher who is now Pitching Coach of the Golden Tide.
Swanson, who will be 26 by next season, earned his MBA and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Park-Gilbert business program. He served as pitching coach at Skyline High School (6A) in Mesa, AZ before accepting the HPU offer. He is married to Madeline, and they reside in Kailua, HI.
“This is an extremely special opportunity for me, to return home and coach in front of this amazing city is such a privilege,” said Swanson. “I’m excited to coach some great young men and bring a West Coast League championship home to Victoria.
“It is a tremendous honour to have the chance to coach alongside Coach Haney, someone I consider a mentor. His intensity and passion for player development combined with his true joy for the game are traits that I admire as a coach.”
Swanson was 7-3 in his collegiate career, including playoffs and non league, including five starts.
Opdam Bak was a HarbourCat for two seasons and spent four seasons with the Golden Tide, as a dependable starter. He made eight starts last spring for the Tide, going 3-1 — he made 17 CCBC starts overall.

Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park will be abuzz with fans packing the seats for at least 31 home games in 2026, as well as the West Coast League All-Star Game.

VICTORIA, BC — Who is the next Nathan Lukes, to don the V-Cat logo and start a path to the World Series?
That will come into focus starting in May of 2026 when the Victoria HarbourCats — the first collegiate summer league team of Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lukes, a playoff star this fall — begin an eventful West Coast League campaign with a road series in Portland.
It won’t just be the games with the HarbourCats to look forward to, it will also be about the 2026 WCL All-Star Game being played at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park as part of a planned Festival of Baseball, July 14-15. The HarbourCats are hosting the event in both 2026 and 2027.
“No question, this is the most anticipated season yet for us — the All-Star Game, after a very strong schedule leading up to that, and playoffs to follow,” said Christian Stewart, the GM of the HarbourCats. “The variety of visiting teams, the rivalries with teams like Nanaimo, Wenatchee and Bellingham, facing the other tough Canadian teams — it’s a great mix for our fans and our corporate partners.”
The HarbourCats open on the road on Friday, May 29, against the Pickles, then are back on the island for the home opener on Tuesday, June 2, against the Edmonton Riverhawks.
Tentative plans for fireworks dates are Saturday, June 6 (vs. Kelowna Falcons, now managed by former Blue Jay Gregg Zaun), Tuesday, June 30 (vs. the Nanaimo NightOwls), and a special event on Monday, August 3 featuring local talent and a fireworks show to follow.
Further plans to announce popular features such as the Woofability Bark in the Park, the Mayfair Optometric School Spirit game (and maybe a second game!), something we are calling “Early Father’s Day,” and Harvey’s Birthday will be announced soon. Game times remain the popular 6:35pm, except for Sundays (1pm) and the School Spirit games (11am).
“Getting two teams from Oregon at our park this year will be fun — we have the first visit from the Springfield Drifters (June 12-13-14) and a rare appearance by the Bend Elks (July 7-8-9),” said Stewart, who is taking season ticket bookings and doling out 12-packs of tickets already.
“We plan to have the All-Star Game package on sale in short order, too — we love that we have so much time to plan out the WCL schedule and make it work for promotions and logistics. We are known for our creative ideas — this schedule will make things a lot of fun next summer.”

VICTORIA, BC — It’s the norm for players to want to run it back for another summer, and four such returning players have started the foundation for the 2026 Victoria HarbourCats — headlined by a slugging DH/first baseman.
Logan Shepherd, a powerful right-handed hitter from Olympia, WA, will be back with the HarbourCats next summer. A product of Tacoma Community College and now at Mercer, he tied the franchise record for home runs in a season with eight last year, batting .345 and driving in 41 runs while being named to the West Coast League all-star game.
“Logan put up some serious numbers for us and wants to get even more out of the Victoria experience,” said WCL veteran head coach Todd Haney, who will be in his sixth season leading the HarbourCats when May rolls around. “He was a leader, and these players announced today will help us continue with the culture we have established with this program.”

Lopez also put up all-star worthy numbers, if he’d been able to join the team earlier in the season — .350 with 18 RBIs in 21 games, hitting three home runs and providing premium defence behind the plate.

Lindsey pitched in 13 games with 27 strikeouts in 24 innings of work, mostly out of the bullpen — a high-leverage, dependable arm for Haney and the coaching staff. Janovsky, playing near his hometown of Surrey at UBC, was 2-1 while giving up 19 hits in 21.1 innings of work, with 19 strikeouts.

VICTORIA, B.C. — The capital city of British Columbia will become the centre of the West Coast League (WCL) for two days in October.
The 2025 WCL Fall Meetings, featuring a gathering of team owners/directors, will be held in Victoria, October 20-21. This marks the first time the meetings, often staged near a major U.S. airport (Seattle or Portland) for travel and logistics reasons, have been held in Canada since the formation of the collegiate elite baseball league that evolved from a gathering in Kelowna in 2003, with the Kelowna Falcons as one of the founding members — and the lone Canadian entry until the HarbourCats were founded.
Five of the league’s 17 teams now are located in Canada — in Victoria, Nanaimo, Kelowna, Kamloops and Edmonton. Kamloops, Nanaimo and Edmonton all started play in 2022.
The HarbourCats, who joined the WCL for the 2013 season and have watched as eight former players have advanced to the MLB level, will also welcome the league to Victoria in July of 2026 and 2027 when the organization plays host to the WCL All-Star Game festival for consecutive seasons, showcasing Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park. The all-star game was held in Bellingham the last two summers.
“The inner harbour in fall will be a fantastic setting for these meetings, just as it will be for events around the WCL All-Star Game next July,” said Jim Swanson, Managing Partner of the group that operates both the Victoria HarbourCats and Nanaimo NightOwls.
Topics expected to be discussed are the finalization of the league’s 2026 schedule, WCL marketing initiatives, and ways to improve best practices around player, coach and umpire development — the keystone goal of the WCL.
“I’m incredibly excited to visit Victoria for our fall meetings,” said Commissioner Rob Neyer. “The city’s rich baseball history and beautiful scenery will provide the perfect backdrop for our teams to discuss the future of the League in one of my favorite WCL markets.”

VICTORIA, BC – With the recent news that 2024 HarbourCat Lucas Ramirez had been promoted to “High A” ball in the Los Angeles Angels organization, we felt it was time to give a quick run down on some of our former HarbourCats and where they are now in their pro careers.
In total, 32 former players were active in affiliated professional baseball in 2025, from Rookie ball right up to the MLB level.
MLB
Notable among the 32 players are our currently active MLB guys, including Nick Pivetta (2013)(San Diego), Nathan Lukes (2014) (Toronto), Andrew Vaughn (2017) (White Sox and Milwaukee), Cade Smith (2019)(Cleveland), and Chase Meidroth (2019)(White Sox).
Meidroth is our most recent MLB player, receiving a call up to the Chicago parent club earlier this season and briefly appearing in the same lineup a few times with Andrew Vaughn, before Vaughn was traded to the Brewers.

BEEN THERE DONE THAT….TRYING TO DO IT AGAIN!
In addition to our five active MLB players, three more have had their cup of coffee and are grinding away at the AAA level hoping to get there again.This includes Davis Wendzel (2017) who made his MLB debut in 2024 with Texas but is now with AAA Louisville in the Reds organization, Jack Neely (2019) who appeared for the Cubs in 2024 and is now at AAA Iowa, and finally Mr. HarbourCat himself Alex De Goti (2013-2015), who debuted in 2021 with Houston, but is now with AAA Round Rock in the Texas Rangers system.
KNOCKING ON THE DOOR
A few players have advanced to the AAA level this season and are knocking on the door and hoping for their MLB shot. This includes recently promoted Shane McGuire (2017) who is with AAA Las Vegas in the A’s system, Harrison Spohn (2018-2019) who is with Jacksonville in the Miami Marlins system and Carter Loewen (2018) who is with El Paso in the Padres system.
AJ Lewis (2018) had also advance to AAA Albuquerque in the Rockies’ system, but moved into a front office position with the Chicago Cubs in 2025.
GRINDING AWAY IN DOUBLE A
Players working hard and climbing the ladder at the AA level include AJ Block (2017) and Joe Redfield (2022) who are both with Rocket City in the Los Angeles Angels system, Travis Kuhn (2017) who is with Erie in the Tiger’s system, Indigo Diaz (2017) with Somerset in the Yankees system, Wyatt Young (2016) with Binghamton in the Mets system, and Caleb Ricketts (2018) with Reading in the Phillies system.
Rowdy Jordan (2018) had also advanced to AA Corpus Christi in the Mets system but announced his retirement in 2025. Adam McKillican is also with AA Hartford in the Rockies system but was on full season IR in 2025 recovering from Tommy John surgery.

THE ‘A’s” ARE JUST GETTING STARTED
Ten former players spent time in single A ball this season (either short-season A or high A), the most notable among these being Dakota Hawkins (2019) who finished the year with Brooklyn, but also had stints at the AA and AAA level in the Met’s system.Another 2023 free agent Noah Takacs (2022) is with Bradenton in the Pirates system.
Headlining our 2024 draft class is the aforementioned Ramirez, who is now with High A Tri-City in the Angels organization. Ryan Magdic (2023) is with High A Lansing in the A’s system, Hunter Omlid (2019) is with High A Spokane in the Rockies system, Sean Heppner (2023) is with Lynchburg in the Guardians system, Connor Dykstra (2024) is with Modesto in the Mariners system, and Jesse Brown (2022-2023) is with Jupiter in the Marlin’s system.
From our 2025 draft class, Nick Dumesnil (2023) has been assigned to Lakeland in the Tigers system, while Dallas Macias (2023) is with Augusta in the Braves system.
HEY ROOKIE!
Also just starting their path on the pro ladder and still with their Rookie League teams are Jagger Beck (2024) with the Florida Complex League Astros and Carson Latimer (2023) with the Arizona Complex League Reds.
MOVING ON
In addition to Rowdey Jordan and AJ Lewis who hung up their pro cleats in 2025, a number of other former HarbourCats enjoyed a few years of affiliated minor-pro ball before recently moving on to other things. Here are a few notables:
Nick Meyer (2015) – played six seasons in NY Mets and Tampa Bay organizations, making it to AAA before being released in 2024.
Jack Owen (2017) – The 2017 WCL Pitcher of the Year, played four seasons most with the Lansing Lugnuts before retiring in 2024.
Matt Clayton (2018-2019) – A 2023 free agent signing by Minnesota, played two seasons, all at the A/A+ level.
Dillon Larsen (2019) – Signed by Arizona as a free agent in 2022, played three seasons making it to AA Amarillo before being released.
Josh Gessner (2019) – Signed by the Phillies as a free agent in 2019, moved to Rangers organization where he went to High A Hickory in 2024 before retiring.
Luke Boyd (2017) – Drafted in 2021, played parts of three seasons in Padres system before moving to independent pro ball where he was still pitching for Winnipeg in 2025.
Kekai Rios (2017) – Drafted by Milwaukee in 2018, traded to Dodgers, then Blue Jays where he advanced to AAA Buffalo before being released in 2024.
Joe Record (2013) – perhaps our longest grinding minor leaguer, Record was drafted in 2017 by the Twins and eventually rose to AAA with Houston and ultimately Tampa in 2024 before moving to independent ball where he is still going, having pitched in the Mexican leagues in 2025.

Victoria, BC – The Victoria HarbourCats are extremely pleased to announce the following players have been named to the 2025 “All WCL” team:
The HarbourCats were among seven of the 17 WCL teams that had five or more players named to the First Team, Second Team and Honorable mentions, with the Portland Pickles leading the way with 11 players. Bellingham led the way in the North Division with eight players selected.
Bridges was lights out on the mound for the HarbourCats this season and was selected to the midseason All-Star Game thanks to his 1.83 ERA in his nine appearances, all starts.In that time, he pitched 39.1 innings, striking out 37 and walking only seven.

Shepherd was an offensive catalyst in 2025, hitting .345 with 41 RBI and eight home runs, tying the HarbourCats franchise record. He also added 28 walks to the mix and had an OPS of 1.039.
Beltowski was a pleasant surprise for the HarbourCats, originally intended to be a start of the year fill-in player, but he earned himself a regular spot and an All-Star game selection thanks to his .303 batting average, 27 RBI, three home runs and 32 walks.He was also second on the team in runs scored with 44.

Rumberg made seven appearances on the season, all starts, and amassed a 2-3 record with a 3.64 ERA in 29.2 innings of work. He struck out 35 and walked only 11. His most notable appearance was his last, going seven complete innings in a 13-8 win over Wenatchee.
Lindsey was a consistent arm out of the bullpen for the ‘Cats, appearing in 13 games and earning a 2-1 record with two saves and a 4.12 ERA. He also pitched two innings of scoreless relief in Victoria’s 3-1 playoff win in Edmonton, striking out three to earn the save.

VICTORIA, B.C. – Using his signature phrase of “figure it out,” the Victoria HarbourCats would like to thank coach Scott Anderson for his years as Pitching Coach of the West Coast League team. He has, indeed, figured out that he is saying a fond good-bye to the organization.
Anderson, a veteran baseball guy and a veteran of the league, will turn 70 in October — a very young 70 for all who know him! He has been a tremendous asset on and off the field in guiding the pitching staff and working so closely with Head Coach Todd Haney for three seasons — the HarbourCats have enjoyed every moment, and Scott will always be a part of the family.
“Scott has been tremendous in the role, his pitchers loved working with him,” said Managing Partner Jim Swanson. “He was the perfect addition for us three years ago and gave us every bit of his energy. Such a classy baseball gentleman — even when suggesting an umpire should maybe return to school,” Swanson joked. (Well, kinda…)
The HarbourCats made the WCL Playoffs all three years Anderson was pitching coach, including the run to the Championship Final in 2023. The Cats had a combined regular-season record of 100-62 in three years with Anderson on the coaching staff.
Countless pitchers who have played in Victoria and worked under Anderson have seen major improvements in their game. Right-handed pitchers Carson Cormier and Tommy Bridges were named to the WCL All-Star Games in 2024 and 2025 respectively. Anderson has also played a part in the development of recent MLB draftees such as Ryan Magdic, Sean Heppner, and Carson Latimer, who all played for the Cats in 2023.

EDMONTON, A.B.– The Victoria HarbourCats rallied late, scoring five runs in the ninth inning, but fell just short of a comeback as the Edmonton Riverhawks won 8-7 to advance to the North Division Final, ending the Cats’ season.
The Riverhawks wasted no time this afternoon, scoring six runs in the opening frame. A wild pitch brought home the first run, which was followed by two more coming home when a ground ball snuck past Jack Johnson (Tulane U) at first base. RBI singles from Jaxon Fox and James Cote, along with an RBI groundout, gave the hosts a huge 6-0 lead early.
The Cats started to claw their way back in the fourth inning when Dillon Lopez (St. Mary’s) and Jake Butler (George Mason) singled and found themselves in scoring position with two outs. On an 0-2 count, Isaiah Afework (TAMU-CC) split the left side of the infield to drive home both baserunners, cutting the Hawks’ lead to 6-2.
Tyler Patrick (Fresno State) started for Victoria, and after the whirlwind first inning, he settled in and kept the Hawks at bay, completing six innings allowing just one hit from the second to sixth innings, striking out four Hawks.
Garrett Villa (Angelo State) replaced Patrick and was one pitch away from escaping the seventh inning unscathed, but gave up a two-run single to Shiryu Sato, increasing the hosts’ lead to 8-2. Villa pitched two innings, giving up those two runs while striking out three.
Hawks starter Myles Chamberlain, who got the win last Monday in Victoria, pitching six innings, was once again dominant tonight. He pitched into the ninth inning, but after surrendering three singles to load the bases, his night came to an end after 8-1/3 innings pitched.
Austin Egan was his replacement, but he hit the first two batters he faced, which brought home two runs for Victoria and cut the lead down to 8-4. Tristan Buehring (Whitman College) made it 8-5 on a sacrifice fly, which brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the form of Kamana Nahaku (Hawaii). He smacked a double down the left field line to score a pair and make it a one-run ballgame. Brandon Craven replaced Egan and hit the first batter he faced, bringing up Lopez with the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first. The designated hitter flew out to right field to end the game as the Cats’ comeback came up just short.
The Riverhawks will face the winner of tonight’s game three between the Bellingham Bells and Wenatchee AppleSox with a place in the West Coast League Championship game on the line.
For the second season in a row, the Cats fell in the deciding game in the first round of the playoffs, after losing to the AppleSox in 2024.
