Shepherd shines in Cats’ blowout of Lefties

PORT ANGELES, WA – The Victoria HarbourCats continued their high-scoring road trip Monday night with a 16-6 victory over the Port Angeles Lefties.

It was just a few days ago in Ridgefield when the Cats produced a nine-run third inning that propelled them to a huge 20-5 win. Tonight they went one better, scoring 10 runs in the first inning to take an insurmountable lead before the Lefties even had the chance to come to the plate.

BOX SCORE

The bases were loaded early for Logan Shepherd (Mercer U), who drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single, his first of six RBIs on the night. That was followed by a Cayden Munster (Fresno State) two-run double and a Curtis McKay (Niagara) two-run single to make it 5-0. Back-to-back bases loaded walks surrendered to Garrett Brooks (St. Mary’s) and JC Allen (UC San Diego) brought up Shepherd with the bases loaded once again. The slugger went one better this time, hitting a double that scored all the baserunners, giving the Cats a 10-0 advantage.

Tyler Patrick (Fresno State) made his fourth start of the season and completed four innings for the third time this campaign. The freshman struck out five batters while giving up two runs on seven hits.

WCL STANDINGS

A pair of two-run doubles in the fifth inning from Tanner Beltowski (Westmont) and Shepherd extended the lead to 14-2. Jacob Doyle (Nevada) got in on the action in the sixth inning with an RBI double of his own to make it 15-2. Beltowski recorded his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly later in the frame to give the Cats a 16-2 lead. The shortstop is now hitting .357 on the season, which ranks fifth in the WCL.

Garrett Villa (Angelo State) and Cade Rusch (Bellarmine) both gave up a pair of runs in two innings of work later in the game. Tristin Thomas (West Texas A&M) wrapped up the 16-6 win with a one-two-three ninth inning.

Beltowski, McKay, and Shepherd all had three hits in the game. Shepherd’s big night puts him in the top five in the league in RBIs with 29.

The series continues tomorrow at 6:35 PM as the Cats look to continue their red-hot start to the second half of the season.

Cats drop series finale to Raptors

RIDGEFIELD, WA – The Victoria HarbourCats’ win streak was snapped at five games Sunday Afternoon by the Ridgefield Raptors, who came out on top with a 7-2 win.

The visitors got on the board first when Hudson Shupe (Gonzaga) scored on a wild pitch in the third inning.

Logan Rumberg (George Mason) started his fourth game of the season and was perfect through three innings, retiring nine straight batters to start the game. He ran into trouble the second time through the Raptors’ order when Taylor Takata and Jackson Waller hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the bottom of the fourth to tie the game up 1-1.

BOX SCORE

Rumberg struck out the next two batters, but with two outs, Christian-Mateo Hoffman hit a two-run home run to make it 3-1 and give the hosts their first lead of the series. Rumberg completed four innings, giving up three runs on four hits, while striking out a season-high seven batters.

Andrew Carter (TCU) pitched the final four innings of the game for the HarbourCats and gave up a pair of runs in the sixth inning, then a two-run home run in the eighth to the Raptors’ danger man, Noah Karliner, his 12th of the season.

WCL STANDINGS

Dillon Lopez (St Mary’s) scored on an error in the top of the eighth inning. Ryan McClaskey pitched the final two innings for the Raptors to close out the 7-2 victory.

JC Allen (UC San Diego) and Curtis McKay (Niagara) had a pair of hits each, while Jack Johnson (Baylor) extended his on-base streak to 25 games with a second-inning double.

The HarbourCats begin a series in Port Angeles tomorrow against the Lefties. Games are on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 6:35 PM and can be watched here.

Bridges’ gem powers Cats to fifth straight win

RIDGEFIELD, WA – The Victoria HarbourCats have been rolling in July and showed no signs of slowing down Saturday night, surrendering just one hit all game to the Ridgefield Raptors, cruising to a 6-0 win.

As the HarbourCats have done so often this season, they wasted no time getting on the board, scoring in the first inning through a Logan Shepherd (Mercer U) RBI single. That was the designated hitter’s 23rd RBI of the season, which leads the team.

From there, the story was all about Thomas Bridges (Northwestern U). The right-hander has been downright dominant this season, and tonight was no different, throwing a season-high six scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out five. Once again, he walked zero batters and has only allowed one free pass all season in 26 innings of work. His 0.35 ERA ranks first in the WCL among qualified pitchers. He ranks sixth in the league with 29 strikeouts.

BOX SCORE

Cayden Munster (Fresno State) gave his starter some more run support with a no-doubt solo home run in the fifth inning to double the lead, making it 2-0.

Connor Ross (Cal Baptist) increased the lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly, which was just a few feet shy of a grand slam. An error by the Raptors catcher, Jake Harvey, on the following at-bat allowed Shepherd to score. Later in the inning, Munster drove in his second run of the night with a two-out RBI single to give the Cats a 5-0 lead.

WCL STANDINGS

Victoria took a 6-0 lead in the seventh inning courtesy of a JC Allen solo home run, his fifth of the season in just 11 games. The UC San Diego junior is now hitting .412 on the season and has a slugging percentage of .854.

Austin Lindsey (Hill College) made his eighth appearance of the season out of the bullpen and threw two scoreless innings, giving up no hits, walking one, and striking out a pair. Julian Orozco (Cal Baptist) pitched a three-up-three-down ninth inning to give the HarbourCats their fifth straight win.

After a day off on Friday, Hudson Shupe (Gonzaga) was back in the lineup and had two hits, extending his hit streak to nine games. He has multi-hit efforts in six of those contests.

Cats crush Raptors in 20-5 rout

RIDGEFIELD, WA – On the Fourth of July, the Victoria HarbourCats scored four times as many runs as the Ridgefield Raptors, winning the series opener 20-5.

The fun started in the top of the third inning when the HarbourCats brought 13 batters to the plate and put up nine runs in the frame. Xander “Boogie” McAfee (Texas Arlington) opened up the scoring with an RBI single to make it 1-0. Boogie also had an RBI double later in the inning.

Logan Shepherd (Mercer U) and Dillon Lopez (St Mary’s) drove in one run each with singles, while Tanner Beltowski (Westmont) and Connor Ross (Cal Baptist) each hit two-run singles in the inning. Garrett Brooks (St Mary’s) drove in his first run of the season with a double.

BOX SCORE

The Victoria offence was relentless this afternoon as they put up five more runs in the fourth inning to extend their advantage to 14-0. Shepherd’s RBI single was followed by a Jack Johnson (Baylor) sacrifice fly. Boogie McAfee then hit his second RBI double of the game, and Beltowski smacked a triple to the wall to score another run.

Johnson has reached base in all 24 games he has played this season.

Shea Lake (West Texas A&M) started the game for Victoria and was fantastic through his first four innings of work, surrendering just two hits. He retired the first two batters in the fifth but then pitched into trouble. After the next two Raptors reached base, Taylor Takata hit an RBI single to get the home team on the board. Andrew Estrella then hit a three-run home run to the opposite field to make it 14-4 and put an end to Lake’s outing.

WCL STANDINGS

Marcus Janovsky (UBC) pitched the next 2-1/3 innings and gave up one run on three hits while striking out a pair.

If you thought that complacency would become an issue for the HarbourCats’ offence after 14 runs, you would be sorely mistaken. The visitors tacked on another five runs in the seventh inning through a two-run single by Johnson and a three-run home run from Ross.

Ross had four hits, five RBIs, and scored three runs.

Shepherd drove in his third run of the game in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 20-5. The designated hitter, along with McAfee and Lopez, recorded three hits in the game. Beltowski drove in four runs and had two hits, increasing his season average to .342. The shortstop has two or more hits in five of his last seven games.

Dustin Davidson (Brookhaven) completed the final two innings, facing the minimum, giving up just one hit.

Thomas Bridges (Northwestern U) is the projected HarbourCats starter for game two tomorrow against the Raptors at 6:35 PM. The right-hander will enter the game with a 0.45 ERA in 20 innings of work this season.

Cats dominance continues with sweep of Owls

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Victoria HarbourCats completed the sweep of the Nanaimo NightOwls with an 8-3 win Thursday night. This series was all about the offence, with the Cats putting up 31 runs in these three games.

JC Allen (UC San Diego) has been Nanaimo’s worst nightmare this week, and he continued his hot streak in the top of the first with an RBI single to make it 1-0. The first baseman had eight hits, two home runs, and nine RBIs in this three-game series.

BOX SCORE

Jack Johnson (Baylor) doubled the lead with an RBI single up the middle to give the home team a 2-0 lead after one. He has reached base safely in all 23 games he has played this season. The third baseman drove in his second run of the game in the third inning with an RBI groundout, making it 3-0 HarbourCats.

Jake Butler (George Mason) started for the first time since June 27 and came to the plate with the bases loaded in the fourth. The sophomore smacked a two-run single to left to increase the lead to 5-0. Allen’s RBI groundout later in the frame extended the lead to 6-0.

WCL STANDINGS

Xander “Boogie” McAfee’s second hit of the evening was an RBI single in the fifth inning. Later in the inning, Hudson Shupe (Gonzaga) hit a sacrifice fly to give Victoria a resounding 8-0 lead. McAfee, Butler, and Shupe all had two hits tonight.

Logan Saloman (Nevada) made his second start of the season after throwing five innings of one-run ball last week against the Edmonton Riverhawks. He was even better tonight, shutting the door on the Owls for five innings, surrendering just five hits and striking out three. He recorded his second win of the campaign.

A Jacob Hayes’ two-run shot in the eighth and Tyler Arnold’s solo shot in the ninth gave the NightOwls three consolation runs, but it was too little, too late as the Cats closed it out for the 8-3 victory.

Carson Burks (Hill College) struck out a pair over three innings of relief, and Jalen Sami (Golden Tide) pitched the ninth inning, striking out three.

Allen leads offensive outburst as Cats beat Owls

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Victoria HarbourCats picked up where they left off on Canada Day, putting up season highs in runs and hits Wednesday night, beating the Nanaimo NightOwls 15-9.

It was the visitors who got off to the perfect start in the top of the first inning when Talan Zenk took a Hudson Lance (Coastal Carolina) hanging breaking ball over the left field wall for a three-run home run. It was the second baseman’s second long ball in as many days and his fourth of the season.

In the next inning, it was Tyler Arnold who took another hanging slider from Lance over the fence for a solo shot, making it 4-0 Nanaimo.

The Cats answered back immediately in the bottom half when Jack Johnson (Baylor) drove home Victoria’s first run of the game with an RBI single. Tanner Beltowski (Westmont College) followed that up with a two-run single, making it 4-3. JC Allen (UC San Diego) tied it up at four with a two-out single, and Logan Shepherd (Mercer U) gave the HarbourCats the lead with an RBI single of his own.

Nathan Davis levelled things up at five in the top half of the third with a two-out RBI single. Victoria restored their lead, putting four more runs on the board in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a Jacob Doyle (Nevada) RBI double.

WCL STANDINGS

The scoring kept coming when Zenk drove in two more runs with a double to make it 9-7 HarbourCats after four innings.

Lance lasted three innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, walking none and striking out three. He was replaced by Jacob Thompson (Minot State), who walked three and surrendered two runs on three hits. Oliver Mabee (Nebraska Omaha) took over from there and pitched a season-high 3-1/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits, and striking out three.

WATCH GAMES HERE

Allen hit a two-run home run for his third long ball of the season in the fifth inning to extend the Cats’ lead to 11-7. Hudson Shupe (Gonzaga) and Allen hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth inning to make it 13-7. The NightOwls scored a pair in the top of the seventh before a Beltowski RBI double in the bottom half gave the Cats a 14-9 lead late on.

Allen capped off his player-of-the-game performance by crushing a solo home run in the eighth inning, bringing the score to 15-9. The first baseman went four for four with two home runs, a double, and five RBIs.

Every HarbourCat starter had at least one hit, with Beltowski and Dillon Lopez (St Mary’s) recording three hits each. As a team, Victoria recorded 18 hits and drew 10 walks.

Cats clinch Island Cup with convincing win over Owls

NANAIMO, B.C. – The Victoria HarbourCats celebrated Canada Day by clinching the Island Cup, beating the Nanaimo NightOwls 8-2 at Serauxmen Stadium.

It was the hosts who took the lead early when Talen Zenk hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first, giving the packed home crowd something to cheer about.

BOX SCORE

The Owls doubled their lead in the bottom of the second when Tyler Arnold came into score on a Raoul Fabian Jr. RBI single, making it 2-0.

From that point on, it was all Victoria. JC Allen (UC San Diego) and Dillon Lopez (St Mary’s) hit RBI singles in the third and fourth innings, respectively, to tie the game up at two.

WCL STANDINGS

Connor Ross (Cal Baptist) drove in what proved to be the winning run in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly.

Tyler Patrick (Fresno State) started the game for the HarbourCats and pitched 2-1/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Ben Hewitt (Ottawa) was first out of the bullpen and produced one of his best performances in a Victoria uniform. The big right-hander went 3-2/3 innings, giving up no runs on three hits and striking out a pair. He also recorded the win on the evening.

Dudes hold on for narrow win on Fireworks night

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Victoria HarbourCats welcomed the Redmond Dudes to town for non-league action on the second Fireworks night of the season, and it was the Dudes who came out on top, winning 6-4.

The Dudes jumped out to a quick lead scoring two in the first inning, making it 2-0.

Colton O’Brien cut the Dudes’ lead in half in the bottom of the second with a two-out single up the middle. Garrett Brooks (St. Mary’s U) tied it up at two later in the inning with an RBI single of his own. The Cats took their first lead of the night on a wild pitch, making it 3-2 HarbourCats.

BOX SCORE

Brett Patterson started for the HarbourCats and pitched five innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out three.

The Dudes made it 3-3 in the top of the fifth through a sacrifice fly. The Cats loaded the bases in the bottom half of the fifth and an error by the shortstop allowed a run to come home, giving Victoria a 4-3 lead.

WCL STANDINGS

Zach Swanson came in to pitch the sixth inning and he almost got out of the inning unscathed, but gave up a two-out two-run double to Alex Lavassar to give Redmond a 5-4 lead. The right-hander’s night was done after two innings of work, after pitching a scoreless seventh.

The Dudes pitching kept the Cats at bay through the next few innings as they entered the eighth inning holding on to their slim one-run advantage.

Peter Cunningham came in to pitch the eighth for Victoria but gave up three singles immediately, which gave the visitors an important insurance run, making it 6-4.

Nate Major pitched a three-up-thee-down ninth inning for the Cats. The home team was unable to capitalize on a lead-off walk in the bottom of the ninth as the Dudes closed it out for a 6-4 win.

Sox hang on to complete sweep of Cats

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox completed the sweep of the Victoria HarbourCats with a narrow 6-5 victory Sunday night.

Logan Shepherd (Mercer U) scored on an Isaiah Afework (Tacoma CC) groundout in the top of the second to give the Cats an early 1-0 lead.

The AppleSox tied things up at one with a groundout of their own, when Camden Bates came home on a 4-6-3 double play.

BOX SCORE

The Sox scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead, including a Bates two-run single. Logan Rumberg (George Mason) made his third start of the season for the Cats and went 2-2/3 innings, giving up four runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out one.

Dustin Davidson (Brookhaven) was first out of the bullpen and hit the first batter he faced, and followed that up with a bases-loaded walk. The lefty faced nine hitters over 1-1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

WCL STANDINGS

Afework drove in his second and third runs of the game in the top of the fourth, powering a ball to the wall in centre for a two-run double.

The Sox restored their three-run lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ethan Thomas hit a two-run home run off Davidson, making it 6-3 Wenatchee.

JC Allen (UC San Diego) brought the visitors within one run of the hosts with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh, making it 6-5 Sox.

Cade Rusch (Bellarmine) threw three shutout innings, giving up one hit, walking three, and striking out three, including a big strikeout with the bases loaded to end the threat in the bottom of the seventh.

Afework led off the eighth with his second double of the night, but was stranded there as Joe Thornton retired the next three Cats in order, keeping hold of their slim lead.

Austin Lindsey (Hill College) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out one batter.

Thornton was back out for the ninth and recorded three straight outs to clinch the 6-5 win and the sweep.

Hudson Shupe (Gonzaga) went two for five Sunday night with his first hit being his 100th career regular season hit as a HarbourCat.

Sox rally late to steal win from Cats

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Victoria HarbourCats held a three-run lead late, but the Wenatchee AppleSox battled back to walk it off in the ninth, winning game two of the series 5-4.

The HarbourCats got going early, taking a 1-0 lead in no time through a JC Allen (UC San Diego) RBI single that scored Hudson Shupe (Gonzaga) in the first inning.

The AppleSox answered back immediately when Jake Sanko drove in a run with a single of his own. The scoring stopped until the top of the fourth when Isaiah Afework (Tacoma CC) hit a triple to the wall and was then brought home on a sacrifice fly by Connor Ross (Cal Baptist) to restore their one-run advantage.

BOX SCORE

Thomas Bridges (Northwestern U) has been Victoria’s ace this year and started the game Saturday night. After a relatively shaky opening to the game by his high standards, he settled down and completed four innings, giving up one run on six hits, while striking out five. He walked no one, and has still only walked one batter in 20 innings of work this season.

The Cats extended their lead in the seventh when Shupe singled to centre, scoring Tanner Beltowski (Westmont College). The shortstop came home two batters later when Logan Shepherd (Mercer U) hit an RBI double, making it 4-1 Victoria.

WCL STANDINGS

Carson Burks (Hill College) was first out of the bullpen for Todd Haney’s team and was dominant the first time through the order. The lefty from Buna, Texas, retired the first 10 batters he faced before Jehee Lee hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 4-2.
