June 6, 2023, VICTORIA, B.C. — Welcome to Victoria, Tyler Davis.
The catcher from Fresno State made himself feel quite at home Tuesday night at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park, pounding a three-run home run and adding a sac-fly RBI in his first West Coast League game to pace the Victoria HarbourCats to a 9-5 win over the visiting Walla Walla Sweets.
The North Division first-place HarbourCats are now 5-0 on the season, the Sweets are 0-5. Victoria, which won three games at home against Kamloops to open the summer, will look for a second consecutive series sweep on Wednesday in an 11am start for the annual Mayfair Optometric Clinic School Spirit Game — which will see a gathered crowd of more than 4,000 guaranteed, bolstered by school buses circling the stadium.
Davis, batting eighth, turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead with a blast to left field in the bottom of the fourth — the only extra-base hit on the night for Victoria. The HarbourCats stole nine bases, and reliever Sam Jordan earned the win on the mound, following a four-inning 10-strikeout start from Sean Heppner.

Luke Stutesman took the loss for Walla Walla despite keeping Victoria bats silent for three innings. Both teams had 10 hits, with two-hit efforts from HarbourCats hitters Phoenix Sommay, Kevin Shea and Marco Pirruccello. Nick Dumesnil had two runs driven in.
The HarbourCats send Jack Seward to the mound in the series finale against Walla Walla, with the Sweets countering with Winston Roberts.
Following Wednesday’s game, the HarbourCats will hit the road for their first road trip of the season, a three-game weekend series in Wenatchee against the AppleSox, followed by three in Port Angeles on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, against the Lefties. The HarbourCats will return home to face the Yakima Valley Pippins on Friday June 16th at 6:35. Tickets for that game are available on-line at harbourcats.com/tickets.

June 5, 2023, Victoria, BC – Victoria’s own Kai Gray had a triple, single and three RBI to pace the Victoria HarbourCats to a 8-3 win over the Walla Walla Sweets in West Coast League baseball action Monday night at Wilson’s Group Stadium in Victoria.
The win pushes the HarbourCats season opening win streak to four games, a franchise record for wins at the start of the year, while Walla Walla drops to 0-4, having been swept by the NightOwls in Nanaimo over the weekend.
Gray gave the ‘Cats a 3-1 lead with a two-RBI single in the second and then after Walla Walla tied the game 3-3 with runs in each of the fourth and fifth, added an RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth to give the ‘Cats a 4-3 lead they never looked back from.
HarbourCats starter Benny Roebuck (Kent State) went four innings Monday, working himself out of some trouble spots to leave the game with a 3-2 lead.
A run in the sixth and three more in the bottom of the eighth, courtesy in part of a two-RBI single from Jack Johnson, sealed the deal. Johnson’s hit capped off a three-hit, two-RBI night for the Baylor sophomore. He also scored three runs.
Dawson Hurford gets the win in relief of Benny Roebuck, while Brett Harvey closed out the final two innings. Walla Walla starter Heitaro Hayashi took the loss.
Kevin Shea scurries around the base paths en route to scoring one of his three runs on the evening.
The HarbourCats and Sweets are right back in action Tuesday night, a 6:35 pm start, on $10.00 Tuesdays, where all General Admission and Premium Reserve seats are just ten bucks! Then on Wednesday, at 11AM it is the annual School Spirit game, sponsored by Mayfair Optometric Clinic. Note all reserved seating is sold out for Wednesday and General Admission seating is standing room only, or down in the right-field soccer grandstand.
Tickets for all games are available through the HarbourCats one and only ticketing partner, Select Your Tickets, at harbourcats.com/tickets.
June 4, 2023, Victoria, BC – Kevin Shea’s (above) two-RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Victoria HarbourCats an exciting 4-3 walk-off victory over the Kamloops NorthPaws in West Coast League action Sunday afternoon at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park.
The win gave the HarbourCats the sweep over the NorthPaws to start the season 3-0 and send the close to 2,000 sun-baked fans home happy.
The NorthPaws started off strong, scoring two runs in the first inning off Victoria starter Davis Franklin. They would add another in the eighth to jump into a 3-0 lead , but the HarbourCats finally got things going, scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth to decrease the NorthPaws lead to a one run game.
The ‘Cats had a chance to tie the game or even take the lead in the eighth, but a great snag of a hard-hit line drive by the NorthPaws’ first baseman Nathan Gray, robbed Victoria’s Ryan Magdic of a sure RBI double. Gray then stepped first to force out baserunner Russell Young, ending the inning with a double play.
HarbourCats pitcher Tucker Christensen struck out three straight NorthPaws batters in the top of the ninth to keep the HarbourCats within a run.
The Challenger Baseball folks took to the diamond pre-game Sunday, to enjoy a fun day at the park.
The ‘Cats started off the bottom of the ninth strong with a single by Kai Gray, and then Bradden Kesey reached on an error by the Kamloops third baseman. Hometown player Ty Hall then laid down a beautiful bunt single to load the bases and set the stage for Shea, who laced the first pitch he saw to left centre field, scoring the tying and winning runs and sending the HarbourCats on to the field to celebrate the series sweeping victory.
The HarbourCats will look to extend their win streak on Monday as the Walla Walla Sweets come to town for the first of a three-game set. Both Monday and Tuesday have a 6:35 PM start time, while the Wednesday game goes at 11:00 AM for our annual School Spirit Game with Mayfair Optometric. Tickets for all games available at the gate or at harbourcats.com/tickets.
At Monday’s game, be sure to arrive early as the Greater Victoria Mixed Slo Pitch Association will be holding a home run derby prior to the game!

June 3, 2023, VICTORIA, B.C. — Jack Johnson’s one-out two-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning proved the difference as the Victoria HarbourCats defeated the visiting Kamloops NorthPaws 6-4 in front of 3,014 fans on Saturday night.
The win, which featured a long two-run home run to straight away centre field by first baseman Ryan “Magic” Magdic, a rarely reached part of the Wilson’s Group Stadium at RAP park, moves Victoria to 2-0 on the season with a chance to sweep the NorthPaws (0-2) in a Sunday afternoon game in Victoria (1pm).
Ryan Magdic, here being introduced Friday, had a big home run in Saturday’s win over Kamloops.
Johnson had two of the five hits by the HarbourCats. Jake Finkelstein got the win in relief, following starter Cam Caley and bullpen arms Levi Abbott and Josh Berenbaum. Caley’s start, giving up just one hit in five innings while striking out nine and walking three, was historic in that his catcher was fellow Baylor player Harrison Caley, believed to be the first brother pitcher-catcher combo to start a game in West Coast League history.
David Jeon took the loss. Kamloops mustered just three hits, and the teams made two errors each.
Following Sunday’s series finale, the HarbourCats stay home to face the Walla Walla Sweets in games Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Wilson’s Group Stadium at RAP. Tickets for all games are available on-line at harbourcats.com/tickets or at the gate.

June 2, 2023, Victoria, BC – The Victoria HarbourCats broke open a 3-3 tie with a six-run sixth inning, to cruise to a 13-3 win over the Kamloops NorthPaws in the West Coast League (WCL) season opener for both teams Friday night in front of just over 2,100 fans at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria.
HeadCoach Todd Haney shares a chuckle as he prepares to submit the first line-up card of the 2023 season.
After falling behind 1-0 to Kamloops in the second inning, a Russell Young solo home run highlighted a three-run HarbourCats fourth inning, putting the ‘Cats up 3-1.
Kamloops would score a pair in the fifth to tie things up, but in the sixth, the HarbourCats took advantage of some sloppy NorthPaws pitching, and after a two-run double from Ryan Magdic and an RBI single from Kevin Shea, the HarbourCats had vaulted into a 9-3 lead.
Ryan Magdic, a Florida Southern product, had a two-hit and two-RBI night Friday.
Four more runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a two-run triple from Bradden Kesey and an RBI single from Nick Dumesnil sealed the deal and cemented the HarbourCats win.
Returning HarbourCat Jack Seward got the start for the HarbourCats and lasted two innings, giving up a run and two hits. Dawson Hurford, Brett Harvey and Allan Dai saw work in relief.
HarbourCats starting pitcher, Jack Seward
At the plate, both Young and Magdic finished the night with a pair of hits, with Young scoring three times and Magdic notching a pair of RBI. Kasey finished the night with three-RBI, while Kevin Shea quietly had a three-hit night, including two doubles, from the ninth spot in the order.
For Kamloops, six different players had hits, including right fielder Felix Chenier-Rondeau, who added a pair of RBI.
Tyrelle Chadwick was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs and two walks in that pivotal sixth inning.
HarbourCats second baseman Phoenix Sommay awaits the throw during a Kamloops stolen base attempt.
The HarbourCats and NorthPaws continue their three-game set on Saturday night at 6:35 pm, with the first of four 2023 fireworks celebrations to follow after the game. The series then closes with a Sunday matinee at 1:05 pm. February 28, 2023
For Immediate Release
VICTORIA, B.C. — Top arms from TCU, a pro prospect catcher from George Mason and three local players highlight the latest round of signings for the 2023 season of Victoria HarbourCats baseball.
“We always value securing local and Canadian players where they fit with their stage of development and the quality competition in the West Coast League,” said General Manager Christian Stewart. “Our fans also like seeing players return, and that’s the case in these latest signings with Cooper Crompton, Noah Takacs and Dawson Hurford. I know the coaching staff is excited to see Connor Dykstra and Tyrus Hall, and the TCU guys coming north for the summer are premium arms.”
Announced today are:
Tyrus Hall, IF, school undecided, 6-2/190, Victoria, B.C.
Connor Dykstra, C, George Mason University, 6-1/230, Chilliwack, B.C.
Cooper Crompton, RHP, Iowa Western (committed to Oregon), 6-5/180, Langley, B.C.
Kole Klecker, RHP, Texas Christian University (TCU), 6-2/205, Chandler, AZ
Louis Rodriguez, RHP, Texas Christian University (TCU), 6-1/205, Long Beach, CA
Hall is a Canadian national junior team product who played for the Victoria Eagles, and is known for his defence and strong arm. He is taking a gap year after high school and going to showcase events while working through his recruitment process, and will decide on a college program soon. Has primarily played as a shortstop.
Former Victoria Eagle and Canadian JNP product Ty Hall will give the ‘Cats some great talent in the middle infield
Dykstra, a big man at 6-1/230, found his name on the list of the top 50 NCAA Division 1 catchers due to his strong work behind the plate and his lethal right-hand bat. In 2022, he hit .444 with six home runs and 33 RBIs while also swiping four bases in the Atlantic10 Conference. Dykstra also got hit by pitch 21 times in 51 games played. He jumped to George Mason from Galveston College.
Dykstra will be a solid presence behind the plate this season
Crompton, currently in his second year at Iowa Western, where he is already 2-0 on the season, made five starts for the HarbourCats in 2022, amassing 24.2 innings and giving up just 20 hits while walking only seven and earned a WCL Pitcher of the Week award for his efforts. He is committed to the Oregon Ducks in the fall.
Victorian Noah Takacs will return in 2023 to bolster the HarbourCats pitching staff (Photo: Christian J Stewart)
Rodriguez was a USA Baseball national team participant from the time he was 12, and was Orange County pitcher of the year as a senior in high school. He’s 1-0 with a 3.37 ERA as a TCU freshman. Kole Klecker — already makes the WCL’s all-name team — threw a complete game to help his high school win the Arizona state championship. Is 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA and 11 strikeouts (and no walks) in 8.1 innings already as a freshman at TCU.
Louis Rodriguez has been a member of Team USA since the age of 12 and won in his debut this spring with TCU.
Takacs, a product of the Victoria Eagles, is a sophomore at Sacramento State, was 1-1 with a 5.01 ERA for the HarbourCats in six starts in 2022. He’s now thrown more than 80 innings for Sac State, and is 3-3 over 16 starts.
Hurford, a Victoria Mariners product, threw in six games as a HarbourCat in 2022, with a record of 0-1 and 6.46 ERA. He’s moved from Western Nebraska College to NCAA Division-2 University of Southern Arkansas, where he is used out of the bullpen.
Already 2-0 in his freshman year at TCU, Kole Klecker should be a key arm in the HarbourCats bullpen in 2023.
The HarbourCats celebrate their 10th Anniversary in 2023 and the season kicks off with the home opener against the Kamloops NorthPaws on Friday June 2, 2023. Single game tickets for that game and all 31 HarbourCats home games in 2023 are now on sale and can be purchased on-line through our one-and-only ticketing partner, Select Your Tickets, at harbourcats.com/tickets. 2022 Fan Favourite Jesse Brown returns for the HarbourCats 2023 season
April 14, 2023
For immediate release
VICTORIA, B.C. — He’s from UC Santa Barbara, he can catch, play the outfield, steal bases, drive the ball for extra base hits — and he’s back for another season as a Victoria HarbourCat.
Todd Haney, the Head Coach of the HarbourCats, is pleased to announce the next group of players locked in for the 2023 summer, headlined by returning catcher/outfielder Jessada Brown (UC Santa Barbara), who stole 18 bases in 2022, while hitting .286 with five doubles, a triple and four long balls, which tied for second on the team. He also led the team with eight hit-by-pitch.
“Jesse was a key player for us last year and it’s great to have him back,” said Haney, who led the team to its fourth playoff appearance in the last five seasons played. “He was a presence and made people around him better, got guys better pitches to hit. This is great news to have him back, and to announce him as part of a very athletic group of position players.”
Brown isn’t the only big bat now on the roster — stocky infielder Shay Kubo is hitting .313 (33 hits in 25 games) in the top third of the order for Illinois State, and Dallas Macias, versatile enough to play shortstop or centre field, was a two-sport star (baseball, football) in high school who will be a key player at Oregon State for four years. The lefty hitter’s first college hit was a triple.
Outfielder Lane Brewster of Sam Houston State was leading off and starting in right field as a freshman, following up this spring with four home runs and 10 stolen bases, starting every game for the Bearkats.
The signings today:
C/OF Jessada Brown, UC-Santa Barbara, 5-11/200, sophomore from Seattle
IF/OF Dallas Macias, Oregon State, 5-11/192, freshman from Parker, Colorado
